The Mirror of Poison

Words: 4518 · Source Novel:: The Desire Brewer's Letters

The final letter arrives, addressed to Lu Ping himself, exposing his true identity as the grandson of the disgraced brewer and accusing him of seeking vengeance. Cornered by the surviving townsfolk, he is forced to reveal that the handwriting on all slips matches a document he found in the old judicial archive: a confession written by Zhou Gu, the original investigator, who admitted under duress that he fabricated evidence to protect the real killer, Zhang Zhen, the general’s jealous brother. Zhou Gu, having faked his own death and lived as a hermit, is the anonymous author. Lu Ping confronts the aged Zhou Gu inside the wine cellar where the poison was planted decades ago. The old man whispers that he wrote the letters to dismantle the web of lies he helped create, knowing that only total chaos could force the buried truth into daylight.
