The Widow’s Confession

Words: 3124 · Source Novel:: The Desire Brewer's Letters

The widow of the drowned elder slips a cryptic message to Lu Ping: the letters are written on mulberry paper that only the old Desire Brewer’s workshop produced. As the town succumbs to paranoia, a blacksmith accused of poisoning his master is beaten to death by a mob. Lu Ping investigates the abandoned brewery and finds a hidden ledger revealing that the original poisoned wine that killed General Zhang Cheng was not brewed by his grandfather Yuan Yu, but tampered with by someone inside the Zhang household. That night, a third letter targets the magistrate himself, and Lu Ping is ambushed by masked villagers who believe he is the letter writer, bringing the violence directly to him.
