Novel Summary
In the brooding mountain hamlet of Killian's Notch, a Social Security disability investigator arrives to review a suspicious claim, only to be judged by a clandestine tribunal of elders wielding a savage, frontier justice. Decades later, his daughter, a haunted federal attorney, returns to that rain-choked valley to unearth a conspiracy rooted in childhood trauma and watered by a community's adult indifference. Told in the lyrical, violent prose of the James Lee Burke tradition, this is a story of buried sins, the ghosts of memory, and the possibility of rewriting a blood-soaked destiny.
