Novel Summary
In the rural town of Ashwick, Vermont, a catastrophic once-in-a-century storm traps a fractured community inside a crumbling county jail. When a young inmate with a history of mental illness is found dead under suspicious circumstances, the storm obliterates every trace of forensic evidence. Told through the intertwined perspectives of the inmate’s guilt-ridden sister, a female correctional officer entangled in a web of institutional lies, and a relentless investigator whose own past haunts her, this literary noir peels back the layers of memory and complicity. As the floodwaters rise, so do the secrets, revealing that the search for truth is really a labyrinthine quest to escape the prisons we build for ourselves.
