Novel Summary
In the mist-locked city of Tidehaven, a lonely archivist named Maeve Calder is drawn into a trademark dispute between her employer, The Rusted Anchor gin bar, and Duskfall Distributors. The civil case unearths a piece of forensic evidence from a decade-old serial murder trial—the “Wraith of the Wharves,” a killer who drowned victims in reclaimed seawater. Maeve, whose childhood was scarred by unsolved loss, becomes dangerously obsessed with the convicted killer, Gideon Crowe. She begins to collect his writings, mimic his cadence, and hallucinate his presence as a guiding double. When a new drowning fits Crowe’s vanished signature, Maeve’s journal entries reveal she may be the perpetrator, or merely a vessel for her own manufactured memories. As the trademark lawsuit twists into a murder investigation, Maeve must confront whether she is an innocent admirer, a copycat, or the original wraith herself. Sujata Massey’s style of layered psychological depth and cultural texture infuses this story of fractured identity and the lie of coherent recollection.
