Gujarat Fake Laos Visa Scam Case

In early 2025, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch in Gujarat, India, dismantled a sophisticated fake visa racket. The gang, led by Vikram Sharma, operated a bogus travel agency promising lucrative jobs in Laos. They charged laborers up to ₹2 lakh each and provided counterfeit Lao visa stickers and work permits. Over 150 victims were defrauded, some even traveling abroad only to be detained. Following a complaint by victim Ramesh Patel, police arrested Sharma and two accomplices, Deepak Jain and Priya Desai. Investigations revealed high-quality forgeries and a network exploiting blue-collar workers' desperation. The case was fast-tracked, highlighting a major human trafficking and immigration fraud nexus.

In a verdict delivered in late 2025, the Ahmedabad Sessions Court convicted Vikram Sharma under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), and 120B (criminal conspiracy). He was sentenced to 7 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹5 lakh. Deepak Jain and Priya Desai received 5-year terms each. The court ordered the seized assets to be auctioned for partial victim compensation.

The primary dispute centered on whether the accused knowingly forged sovereign documents with intent to defraud, the extent of their network, and the liability for the emotional and financial ruin of victims who were stranded overseas. The defense argued the defendants were mere intermediaries unaware of the forgery, while the prosecution proved a premeditated conspiracy.
