Odisha Gopalpur Beach College Student Gang Rape Case

On January 5, 2025, a 19-year-old female college student was brutally gang-raped at Gopalpur Beach in Odisha's Ganjam district, India. She and a male companion were attacked by a group of men; the friend was overpowered and tied up while the victim was dragged to a secluded spot and sexually assaulted by multiple perpetrators. The crime triggered nationwide outrage. Odisha Police swiftly arrested five suspects, including a minor. In a landmark demonstration of judicial efficiency, a special fast-track court convicted two adult defendants, Siba Prasad Sethi and Pradip Kumar Sethi, and sentenced them to rigorous life imprisonment in April 2025, concluding the trial within just 61 days. The juvenile offender was referred to the juvenile justice board. On April 6, 2025, the Berhampur Fast Track Special Court convicted Siba Prasad Sethi and Pradip Kumar Sethi on charges of gang rape and sentenced them to rigorous life imprisonment.
