Norris v. Garrett

On June 15, 2023, plaintiff Michael Norris filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against Dr. Emily Garrett in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Norris alleged that during a routine laparoscopic procedure, Dr. Garrett negligently severed a bile duct, causing severe complications requiring multiple corrective surgeries and permanent impairment. The plaintiff sought $4.5 million in damages for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. The defense argued that the injury was a known, non-negligent complication and that the surgical technique met the accepted standard of care. After a two-week trial featuring conflicting expert testimonies, the jury deliberated for three days before reaching a verdict.
