Hubbard v. Trussville Gas

On August 10, 2023, a residential natural gas explosion occurred in Trussville, Alabama, destroying the home of James Hubbard and causing him severe burn injuries. Hubbard filed a lawsuit against the local utility, Trussville Gas, alleging gross negligence in the inspection and maintenance of aging cast-iron pipelines. The plaintiff contended that the company was aware of corrosion risks yet failed to replace vulnerable sections or install automatic shut-off valves. The blast also damaged adjacent homes, displacing several families. During the trial, internal company documents revealed repeated deferrals of pipeline upgrades due to cost concerns. The case was heard in Jefferson County Circuit Court, where a jury considered whether Trussville Gas breached its legal duty to ensure public safety.
